Hot Canadian Fashion showdown

The top 10 looks from the TFI new designer showdown

The Toronto Fashion Incubator swept four of its most promising young designers onto the runway this week as part of the group’s annual New Labels competition. Toronto-based Christopher Paunil, Laura Siegel (a Fashion Week veteran), Nomad of the Sun and AliceAzur each showed their best, most carefully-honed pieces before a panel of judges and a room of fashion insiders. The prize: $25,000 in cash, an editorial in FLARE Magazine, and a professionally-produced lookbook.
Who came out on top? That would be AliceAzur’s Miriam Baker, a recent Ryerson grad, who was met with a huge hug from her visibly-moved folks at the end of the runway after accepting her prize. (Aww.) But the competition was stiff; prize or no, you’ll be seeing more of the runners-up yet.
Here are my picks for the top 10 looks from TFI New Labels 2014.
ABOVE: Nomad Of The Sun’s Ashley Boutcher focuses on swimwear tailor-made for lounging glamorously by the poolside. Her geometric suits were often layered under flowing chiffon – in this case, black sheer trousers and a plunging-front swimsuit made for ’70s-style glamour.

Matohu RTW Spring 2014 JAPAN

©ourtesy of womensweardaily
Matohu Jp FWHiroyuki Horihata and Makiko Sekiguchi opted to take advantage of an exhibition hall’s massive curved walkway to show their spring Matohu collection, which highlighted their signature relaxed yet polished aesthetic along with some modern takes on Japanese silhouettes. The duo is a practiced hand at layering and this season was no exception, with lots of slim trousers shown under dresses or long, lightweight sweater coats, and even a pair of culottes under a jersey skirt. But a few pieces, like a lime-green shift dress, were left to stand alone.

LONDON F/W: DAVID KOMA S/S 2014

As the obvious minimalist I am, I couldn’t help it but fall heedlessly in love with David Koma’s latest collection. Searching up every single piece of clothing he’s ever made, I am now convinced that he may or may not be my current favorite designer.
His creations reminds of less war ready and more sophisticated and pastel-ish ancient Japanese armors.

Another September, another week of fashionistas teetering around Manhattan in impossibly high heels — yes, kids, it’s New York Fashion Week. If you listen closely, you just might hear the sound of Anna Wintour rolling her eyes in the front row of some designer she’s decided to ruin. To keep you in touch and up-to-date on the who, what, where, why and Wang of NYFW, we invited social media maven Gregory Littley to highlight the people, artists, content creators, models, and stylists that you must follow. Just as you’re trotting out your fall wardrobe, Fashion Week hits NYC with hundreds of designers putting out their visions for — yes — Spring 2014. The shows start Thursday and run through Sept. 12, with the major fashion hub at Lincoln Center, where some 75 designers will strut their stuff in the tents at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. But many others are heading downtown, with Jason Wu abandoning the former church on the Upper East Side for a spot all the way down on Mercer Street. Even Calvin Klein is moving his gig to the brand new Spring Studios in TriBeCa, having shown in its garment center headquarters for five years. Night birds are flying into daytime slots — the fellows at Proenza Schouler are showing at noon instead of 8 p.m., and Tommy Hilfiger trades his evening show for an 11 a.m.-er at Pier 94. Change is good, right? But the schedule is crazy and it’s a headache getting from show to show for sure — so much so that clever Advil is providing free Fashion Week transport in a red-stiletto emblazoned SUV.

Neck cuff, is the new trend?

©ourtesy of
cuff1_thumb_600x400
First we had the statement necklaces and those have been around for a long time, there are still a bit around but not like in the beginning. But of course they couldn’t be around for a long time, in the fashion industry a thing ( clothes, accessories) will only be able to be around for a short period of time before it gets replaced by something else. And that is what is happening now with the statement necklace and the neck cuff… well sort of. Is the neck cuff going to replace the statement necklace?

The neck cuffs have been spotted in a lot of collections of top designers like Michael Kors and Céline.

China-Born, Paris-Based Designers Spotlight Heritage At Paris Couture Fashion Week

©ourtesy of JingDaily By
yiqing-yin-015This year’s Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week for Fall/Winter 2013-2014 saw a range of designers from a diverse range of backgrounds presenting their creations on the runway. Among them were China-born emerging designers Laurence Xu and Yiqing Yin, both of whom utilize traditional Chinese elements in their couture lines to create their own distinct aesthetics. Making his mark on the French fashion world, Xu held his first ever haute couture fashion show at Pavillon Cambon. Themed Xiuqiu, which literally means “embroidered ball” in Chinese, the show seamlessly integrated Chinese style and Western elements. As Women’s Wear Daily reported, Xu paraded highly embellished,

As difficult as it is to not shower you with the countless numbers of images that blew our minds, we’ve somehow managed to pull together a peek at the 10 most drool-inducing garments to hit the Parisian runway this season.  From Chanel‘s colorful play on the classics to Kenzo‘s ferocious animal prints, it’s obvious that the French really do have that je ne sais quoi, non?

Toronto F/W Spring 2013: Jean-Pierre Braganza

Not only do we love Jean-Pierre Braganza’s name (“Brrrraganzaaaaa!”) we love the looks we saw during The Shows, a pre-Toronto Fashion Week runway presentation held at Andrew Richards Design’s venue space in Toronto. His pop-art inspired Spring 2013 collection featured strong-shouldered blazers with hits of teal, black, and cream with bold graphic prints.
Fashion:  Graphic pantsuits and wedge heels in nude, black, and black with silver toe straps.

Beauty: Loose-and-intriguing fishtail braids with flattering wisps at the temples for that messy braid look we love.

Milan Fashion Week: day 2

©ourtesy of The Fashion Fruit
The first Milan Fashion Week show of Day 2 was Max Mara. The main inspiration of the collection was Africa and safari style, filtered through the iconic style of the maison. The main items were safari jackets, trenches, jumpsuits and tuxedos. The colors passed from the warm shades like tan, beige, camel to more cold shades and deepest black. I really liked the mix of floral colors and military prints and the oversized tortoise sunglasses.

New York 2012/2013 Fashion Week: The Winter Collection by New York based designer, Marc Jacobs was really … Crazy! It was like 18-17th century fashion mixed with 21st century street style! This fashion week show hosted lots of colors, interesting patterns and some funny looking heels. And the best of all were the too big sized hats made out of fur or other materials. It is worth to mention that the coats that are presented will be the most hottest pieces for winter. Bohemian story through the New York designer Marc Jacobs, who presented his latest collection autumn / winter 2012-2013 in the last Fashion Week in New York.

Designers Hermes and Dior play safe

A model wears a creation by French fashion designer Veronique Nichanian as part of the Men’s Spring-Summer 2013 collection, for Fashion Week, in Paris, France, Saturday, June 30, 2012.

PARIS — Day Four of Paris menswear designers had one overriding message by Paris menswear designers from Dior Homme to Kenzo: – We’re tastefully playing it safe. Fashion collections at this time of year are often about anticipating summer and celebrating color. But in Saturday’s strong line-up of Paris menswear week, shows there was a clear emphasis on hues that tended towards the muted and soft. Subtle shows from designers Kenzo and Hermes featured wide-ranging and inventive palettes, but it was tonal balance that was the key. Dior homme dazzling colors, prominently in previous seasons, appeared only momentarily: like the red splashes in Kris Van Assche’s Dior Homme show. Could this spell the return to elegance for Paris menswear designers? Sunday, the last day of Paris menswear Paris fashion week includes shows by Pierre Cardin, Lanvin and Paul Smith. Read more…
