Before designers show off their wares on the runways of Fashion Week, they channel their inspiration and sketch their creations. For the spring 2014 shows, which kick off Thursday at Lincoln Center and other locales around New York City, those inspirations ranged from Hollywood glamour queens to ancient tribes to modern art. Here’s a peek at some of those fashionable inspirations (in the designers’ own words). — By Julie Gordon, amNew York

Just as you’re trotting out your fall wardrobe, Fashion Week hits NYC with hundreds of designers putting out their visions for — yes — Spring 2014. The shows start Thursday and run through Sept. 12, with the major fashion hub at Lincoln Center, where some 75 designers will strut their stuff in the tents at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. But many others are heading downtown, with Jason Wu abandoning the former church on the Upper East Side for a spot all the way down on Mercer Street. Even Calvin Klein is moving his gig to the brand new Spring Studios in TriBeCa, having shown in its garment center headquarters for five years. Night birds are flying into daytime slots — the fellows at Proenza Schouler are showing at noon instead of 8 p.m., and Tommy Hilfiger trades his evening show for an 11 a.m.-er at Pier 94. Change is good, right? But the schedule is crazy and it’s a headache getting from show to show for sure — so much so that clever Advil is providing free Fashion Week transport in a red-stiletto emblazoned SUV.

New York: MARC JACOBS Fall 2012-13

Marc Jacobs Winter 2012-13 Collection

New York 2012/2013 Fashion Week: The Winter Collection by New York based designer, Marc Jacobs was really … Crazy! It was like 18-17th century fashion mixed with 21st century street style! This fashion week show hosted lots of colors, interesting patterns and some funny looking heels. And the best of all were the too big sized hats made out of fur or other materials. It is worth to mention that the coats that are presented will be the most hottest pieces for winter. Bohemian story through the New York designer Marc Jacobs, who presented his latest collection autumn / winter 2012-2013 in the last Fashion Week in New York.

Cornejo, New York Designer for ‘Zero’ talks fashion

© Story by Merle Ginsberg at hollywoodreporter.com

Designer Maria Cornejo host New Show With Artist Alice Waese and Wearing Her Own Designs as she was in Los Angeles to launch an art show and début her resort and pre-fall collections.

Maria Cornejo Designs - H 2012

THR Q&A: Zero’s Maria Cornejo is one line of clothes out of New York that is an insiders’ fashion brand, and her New York fashion week runway shows always prove that, as they are attended by editors at the highest levels of the fashion business. Her clothes are always comfortable and chic, go from day to  with a quick change of shoes or jewelry and  have an avant-garde city cool-girl edge that’s sophisticated without hitting that “arty” line too hard. In other words, they’re rather perfect. Her pants, sweaters and leather jackets have amazing fit and a little twis,- and her dresses achieve the impossible trifecta: They’re sexy and comfortable and interesting. All this, and her prices are much better than most designer clothes, but the quality doesn’t suffer. No wonder smart women love her. Cornejo has a longtime small West Village boutique at Greenwich and Jane, but her eponymous Melrose Place space is many times the size and has the airy feeling of an art gallery. That’s why she decided to host a small art gathering for her friend, former employee and present artist Alice Waese, from New York City, who creates art out of metal, silver and paper. Cornejo doesn’t get to L.A. often as she’s busy Continue reading

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid Host to Talent, LEANDRO CANO

Dramatic and eccentric, two adjectives that we hardly ever get to use when it comes to the already proven fashion designers at Madrid’s Fashion Week, but those are the words that describe the best Leandro Cano’s Haute Couture creations. Using natural materials such as wool and leather he constructed a collection that distorts the female body but somehow he managed to create an amazing theatrically feminine fashion show.  The textures Cano composed show his sense and ability of creating an astonishing couture pieces of clothes. Korean Design into New York FW

Concept Korea IV - Spring 2012
Photos: Concept Korea IV – Spring 2012
all photos by Kwai Chan
Korean fashion design has slowly made an inroad into New York, and it all started with the Concept Korea designer collectives that began four seasons ago.  Some designers from past seasons, such as Son Jung Wan and Parkchoonmoo, now have solo shows as part of the official Fall 2012 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week schedule.  Others are veterans of other Fashion Weeks around the world, such as the duo of Steve J. and Yoni P. who showed at the London Spring 2010 collections. For its fourth edition, Concept Korea featured the following designers in a presentation style: Son Jung Wan (who also held her second New York solo runway show later in the week), Lie Sang Bong, Steve J. and Yoni P., Doho, and Resurrection by Juyoung.  Although an understandably mixed bag in terms of aesthetics and styling with five very different design sensibilities, the collective represented South Korea’s continuing evolution in the world of fashion.  Lie Sang Bong used psychedelic shimmering neon space age cuts inspired by traditional Korean fashion, with killer matching fan clutches.  Doho chose a more ethereal route, with asymmetrical layered piles of tulle and other fabrics dominating.  Juyoung presented the only men’s collection of the five, combining color with semi-formal dress shirts.  Son Jung Wan chose to exhibit some additional looks that were not a part of her solo runway show; her commercially appealing womenswear is much better suited to this presentation format than on the catwalk.  Finally, Steve J. and Yoni P. channeled the ‘70s with their capsule collection, with flower power prints and tie-dyed dresses. – - © Story By Yuan-Kwan Chan

Stella McCartney shows Fall 2012 in New York City

At an intimate presentation, cocktail party followed by her new store opening, Stella McCartney began 2012 as she means to go on.

Stella McCartney launches Pre-Fall 2012 and opens new Soho storeStella McCartney’s in between seasons presentations are always something to look forward to. Her autumn 2012 collection was held in New York, at One If By Land, Two If By Sea, a restaurant often voted the most romantic in the city. Models wandered around the candlelit cocktail party drinking champagne and playing pool and backgammon. The roaring fires, huge bouquets of flowers, photography books and a jazz band playing in the corner, meant McCartney’s presentation felt more like a convivial house party, not a stress inducing rushed runway show. There were vegan hors d’oeuvres. McCartney’s autumn accessories collection – also vegan – were on display in a room overlooking a winter garden. – - read more

Lady Gaga’s Workshop Opens 11:59 tonight at Barney’s ... see You there!

Eff you, Black Friday! And eff you, too, Brown Thursday! Tomorrow is Rainbow Tuesday! That’s the name that the opening of Gaga’s Workshop at Barneys, occurring at 11:59 this evening, should rightly if arbitrarily lend to the day. Gaga is supposed to be there to officiate things, so hopefully she can be on time since the marketing so delicately hinges on the 11:59 time stamp. Apparently in addition to a “click-to-hatch version of Lady Gaga in her famous Hussein Chalayan egg from the Grammy Awards,” the Gaga-themed shop-in-shop, curated by her stylist Nicola Formichetti along with Barneys creative director Dennis Freedman, contains food. – - courtesy of NYmag - By Amy Odell
Admit it, you want your picture taken in Gaga’s mouth. Get one of those foam fingers people take to sports games and you could really get creative with it.

Classy 2012 Resort Wear by STELLA McCARTNEY

In a garden in Manhattan’s West Village — a location perfectly suited to the classic vacation concepts of leisure and fun — Stella McCartney presented a playful Resort 2012 collection. Models milled about in a vibrant mix of color and prints: multi-colored stripes, oversized Hawaiian florals, black-and-white herringbone, and shades of orange and lemon. “All this color and print is about exciting and reenergizing people,” McCartney explained, “and it’s nice for everyone to see that you can actually enjoy and live in these clothes.”  photos courtesy of  Stella McCartney

Stella McCartney’s mind was elsewhere this season: Hawaii. “It’s such a rich, visual place to start,” she said. From there, she grew a collection full of hibiscus and surfer prints, deck-chair stripes, seersucker and neon-tipped accessories, giving off a joyful, relaxed vibe. McCartney keeps it from going too much over the top, though, with consistent clean shapes. The sportier silhouettes, including a culotte-style jumpsuit, long garden-party skirts and shorts paired with rounded capes, suited the croquet-playing models in the Greenwich Village garden where the presentation was held. The dressier outfits, including a black tuxedo with an almost tails-length jacket and skinny-at-the-ankle pants, and a white dress embroidered with bows, complemented the flutes of champagne offered at the party-like preview. McCartney also gave a nod to the mod looks of London in the 1960s, offering a series of houndstooth looks — sometimes mixing those with menswear-inspired pieces, such as a sunshine-yellow blazer with wide lapel and crisp shirt. “Tailoring is updated with a new silhouette,” she explained in her notes, referring to a jacket with notched lapel. She also showed what she described as a “cropped cigarette French cuff trouser and blouses with three-dimensional bow embroidery in a palette of black with chalk or Tokyo blue with tobacco.”
