MFW 2014: Dolce & Gabbana strikes GOLD!

Gold Dolce & Gabbana SS 2014 002

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have had money matters on the mind of late. Those much documented tax woes manifested this afternoon in a collection that was quite literally all about the money – ancient gold coins to be precise that looked like they had been dug up on an archaeological excursion – before being polished, naturally. That excursion too, might have extended to a tour of the roman ruins, those as well were a recurring motif this afternoon. It was an imaginary journey, they said, to rediscover ancient Sicily. Coins were blown up to the size of tea plates and joined together to make impressive waist cinchers, or else chain-mailed into a jingling mini dress, while others were suspended in hoop earrings or stuck to barrettes positioned into messy up-dos.
 Gold Dolce & Gabbana SS 2014 001
Lithographs of sepia-hued, postcard-pretty crumbling columns, Greek temples and theatres were printed over silk dresses; strict and midi length and buttoned all the way up the back, or else, mini and flared with wide sleeves – two silhouettes that Dolce and Gabbana have been preoccupied with for several seasons now. Variations on those would have been welcoming to witness, in fact, there were several parallels between this collection and the duo’s autumn/winter 2013 outing where they mined the golden mosaics of Sicily’s Cathedral of Monreale (all that gold must be a winner at retail, these designers hold big appeal for the moneyed set). Those clients then, will be delighted with the gold rush finale today; golden dresses every which way – from lace to others encrusted in faceted crystals, or crafted in laser-cut leather.

Milan Fashion Week: day 2

The first Milan Fashion Week show of Day 2 was Max Mara. The main inspiration of the collection was Africa and safari style, filtered through the iconic style of the maison. The main items were safari jackets, trenches, jumpsuits and tuxedos. The colors passed from the warm shades like tan, beige, camel to more cold shades and deepest black. I really liked the mix of floral colors and military prints and the oversized tortoise sunglasses.

Milan Fashion Week opens with an explosion of colors

After New York and London, it’s Milan Fashion Week turn to have a say as to how women will dress for the spring-summer 2013. If the first day of previews was any indication, next summer will feature a lot of bold color and patterns. While the more structured, usually daytime, looks were in heavier fabrics, evening or playtime came in airier, diaphanous materials like chiffon and tulle at Gucci in Milan.
‘Sophisticated and essential’: Gucci’s Spring and Summer 2013 collection featured bold shades
Romantic looks: Some of the delicate prints were reminiscent of Japanese floral wallpaper and the bell sleeves of a simple cocktail sheath (left) underlined the couture feel of the Gucci collection
Milan designers are offering more romantic looks rather than their trademark slinky and sexy. Long and loose pants were paired with ample tunic tops while voluminous long skirts offered a nice sweep. The accessories – high-heels and bags alike – often replicated Read more…

Jil Sander Fashion Designer ‘Raf Simons’ replaces Galliano

Belgian designer Raf Simons cries at the end of his final Jil Sanders show.

A Fashion show hosted by Jil Sander is usually cool temples of austerity but the atmosphere was crackling with emotion on Saturday when fashion designer Raf Simons showed his final collection for the house at Milan Fashion Week shows. The Belgian-born fashion designer received a standing ovation for his swan song, an opulent symphony to minimalism comprised of clean cuts and double-faced cashmere coats in sugary pinks, pale grey and white fashion looks. The volume of the coats in the fashion show were all countered by fine knit dresses cut close to the body, along with others incorporating seams used to construct geometric shapes. The fashion show was one of the better shows, no doubt. Belgian designer Raf Simons cried  at the end of his final Jil Sander  fashion show. (Photo: AFP) Simons is leaving the brand after 6½ critically acclaimed years to make way for the return of German designer Jil Sander to the house she founded in 1968. It will be the third coming of Sander at her label: she left it twice when it was controlled by the Prada Group because of creative differences. Designer Sander said she was excited to Read more…
