Milan Fashion Week opens with an explosion of colors

After New York and London, it’s Milan Fashion Week turn to have a say as to how women will dress for the spring-summer 2013. If the first day of previews was any indication, next summer will feature a lot of bold color and patterns. While the more structured, usually daytime, looks were in heavier fabrics, evening or playtime came in airier, diaphanous materials like chiffon and tulle at Gucci in Milan.
‘Sophisticated and essential’: Gucci’s Spring and Summer 2013 collection featured bold shades
Romantic looks: Some of the delicate prints were reminiscent of Japanese floral wallpaper and the bell sleeves of a simple cocktail sheath (left) underlined the couture feel of the Gucci collection
Milan designers are offering more romantic looks rather than their trademark slinky and sexy. Long and loose pants were paired with ample tunic tops while voluminous long skirts offered a nice sweep. The accessories – high-heels and bags alike – often replicated Read more…

Milan MENSWEAR June 2011 Collections

Edited by Antonella Ciancio, Reuters

MILAN – Fashion designers at the Milan menswear week opted for untied shirts, raffia hats and crocodile espadrilles for next summer to lighten up the wardrobes of men who dress to impress. Milan’s holiday-themed collections brought a whiff of fresh air into the fashion industry, which is undergoing an intense round of consolidation and bourse listings. Luxury groups Prada and Salvatore Ferragamo are aiming to raise as much as $2.67 billion in their initial public share offerings, or IPOs, this month. “It’s fantastic to see all these projects that are warming up the market. Investors’ interest shows that the fashion industry is growing,” Gianluca Brozzetti, Chief Executive of Italian fashion house Roberto Cavalli, told Reuters. Trendsetter designer Miuccia Prada, back from a fashion show in Hong Kong for IPO investors, delivered in Milan a carefree collection inspired by golf courses, with ironic shirts in cartoon and floral prints playing with tailored suits. The fashion industry, a key contributor to Italy’s economy, is expected to generate 65 billion euros ($93 billion US) this year, according to Italy’s Chamber of Fashion, up 7% from 2010. At Ferragamo, designer Massimiliano Giornetti brought guests to the French Riviera for his laidback collection, with models in raffia panama hats and close-fitting suits in creamy colours. A scent of the Riviera also reached Ermenegildo Zegna, featuring crinkled silk jackets in muted bleached colours. ...See more Photos and Read more -- CLICK HERE

ANNA PIAGGI: a Fashion Original

The "Grand Dame" of Italy's Expression of High Fashion by way of Italian VOGUE. For over 50 years Ms. Piaggi has written and "racked" Europe's Look at fashion. Inparticularly Italy, France & England. She is most definitely a Living LEGEND. Now in her Seventies, Anna Piaggi still expresses and shows ALL that follow, how it's ALL done. Style! This is Something Anna Piaggi has always exhilarated. Lucky for me, I had a chance to meet and hang out with her and her late husband, Alfa Castaldi at their home when I lived in Milano, thanks to Yvonne Taylor Cheyne. WOW! They gave lovely parties back then and she is indeed, a Lovely human being. I have collected some great photos of Anna Piaggi for your viewing. After you have reviewed them you will see why she continues to be such an inspiration to the Industry called FASHION. Further Notes on Miss Piaggi follows:
Anna Piaggi is an Italian fashion writer and style icon. Anna Piaggi has worked as a translator for an Italian publishing company Mondadori, then written for fashion magazines such as the Italian edition of Vogue and, in the 1980s, the avant-garde magazine Vanity. She is known especially for double page spreads in the Italian Vogue, where her artistic flair has been given free expression in a montage of images and text, with layout by Luca Stoppini. Since 1969, she has used a bright red manual Olivetti valentine typewriter for her work. Piaggi has a large clothes collection, including 2865 dresses and 265 pairs of shoes, according to a 2006 exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. She dresses in an exuberant, unique and eclectic way, never appearing in the same outfit more than once in public. Such is her influence and knowledge in the fashion world, Manolo Blahnik has dubbed her 'The world's last great authority on frocks'. Her associates in the fashion world include the fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld (from the 1970s), who has often sketched her, and Manolo Blahnik, who is the designer of many of her shoes. She is the muse of British milliner Stephen Jones. She is also an admirer of British clothes designer Vivienne Westwood and her hats, made by Prudence Millinery. She is rarely seen without fingerless gloves, mostly by UK designer label Glovedup Gloves (www.Glovedup.com). She has lived in New York and has visited London and Italy periodically since the 1950s. Piaggi was married to the photographer Alfa Castaldi in 1962 in New York. Castaldi died in 1995.
