PROENZA SCHOULER
The real-people-in-the-pool print on Proenza Schouler’s catwalk Wednesday night probably took some fashion insiders — who don’t expect that much newness during these previews — by surprise. The collection by Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough started off by advancing some trends seen for spring, including leather, patchwork, some perforated and mesh textures. The leather was a little shinier, the patchwork a little more random and the textures a little more exaggerated, but, still, they fell in line. The Proenza Schouler duo also offered skirt suits galore, but they weren’t trim and tailored; jackets were collarless and covered in snakeskin, and the skirts were slung low on the hips. But the digital-print satin dresses decorated with neon nailheads on the tops and grommets on the bottom that served as the finale were only as Proenza Schouler can do, and showed why they are considered one of New York’s bellwethers for fashion’s future. NEW YORK – The story of New York Fashion Week has been told in mostly black and white — making it that much harder to ignore all the unusual prints on the runway, even if they, too, were color-free. Marc Jacobs put out oversized black-and-white and red stripes on Monday a day after stripe-happy Tommy Hilfiger, whose red stripes were inspired by rope. Carolina Herrera showed an abstract geometric print on Monday, while Elie Tahari took his prints from Palm Beach, mixing palm leaves, leopard skin and tropical flowers. in earlier previews, Thakoon Panichgul had playful birds, Suno had a retro cell phone print and Jason Wu had prints reminiscent of an X-Ray. At Rebecca Taylor the print was Hawaiian, with fish scales at Monique Lhuillier and “space clouds” at Nicole Miller. “Prints are personality, they have emotion, they tell a story,” said Stacey Bendet, designer of Alice and Olivia — herself wearing a leopard-print dress on Monday to present a collection that included a variety of florals — from digital prints to painterly and candy-colored. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week continues through Thursday before the fashion crowd heads to London, Milan and Paris.

MARC JACOBS
Let’s switch gears: For the past five days, the chatter at New York Fashion Week has been about softening the edges, but Marc Jacobs changed the conversation — as he often does — after going graphic.
Black-and-white stripes followed by red stripes, tan stripes and more black-and-white stripes came rapid fire down the runway.

Designer Wedding Gown Trends

Oscar de la Renta & Vera Wang 2013 Colors

Oscar de la Renta sent a model down his Bridal Spring 2013 runway wearing pants and a crop top Monday. Taking his cue from one of the most notable trends to come out of the spring 2012 ready-to-wear collections, the designer teamed the ab-fab trend with the traditional. Designer’s banded together in support of the midriff during the spring shows in September, with retro-style bras worn as tops making multiple appearances. Often paired with a pencil or flared skirt, a la Sophia Loren Continue reading
