Fatima Lopes kicks off Paris Fall 2012 Fashion Week

By THOMAS ADAMSON Associated Press ©Mercury News

PARIS fashion designer, Fatima Lopes kicked off Paris 2012 fall-winter ready-to-wear season Tuesday with blood reds, provocative leathers and fox fur at the Hotel des Invalides war museum. The Portuguese designer channeled human morphology with blood-red dress inserts, shredded leather sleeves and prints of the venous system in the iconic monument that was built for generals wounded in French imperial wars. Bucking the current trend for padding, the Lopes woman in geometric sheaths had narrow shoulders a look that would have accentuated the frailty of the tiny-boned models had it not been for the provocative leathers in patent black and nude. “Yes, I make tiny shoulders and waists. But this is not weak. It’s feminine and sexy, therefore strong,” said the designer backstage, wearing one of her figure-hugging creations. And sexy was the overriding mood, with bias-cut sheaths split revealingly up the leg and exposing the shoulders. In another sensual look with a plunging decollete, voluminous brown fox fur sleeves contrasted with tight patent leather lapels and a second-skin micro skirt. When the show ended, the crowd departed sheepishly through the courtyard, with 40 huge canons pointing straight at them. – - see Gallery  : NOTE: International Icons reign supreme at this Paris Read more

Paris Fashion Week hotties show edgyness on the Runway

Balenciaga, Rick Owns, Dries Van Noten, Rochas, Ann Demeulemeester focus

Paris Fall fashion collections began awkwardly. Milan had been so stoutly clear: Bottega Veneta, Jil Sander, weird but wonderful Prada. Now we were 27 floors above the Left Bank, in an office, and the funny thing was — what were the chances? — all of Paris on Thursday morning was soaked in a thick fog. The gray matched the mood of designer, Nicolas Ghesquiere  Balenciaga. It wasn’t intentional. Briefly, Mr. Ghesquiere’s idea was to capture the different styles of office attire among women. “Balenciaga Inc.,” he said backstage. Balenciaga Chic is probably what his fans would prefer to see instead of belted double-faced coats, turtleneck sweaters with cream A-line skirts (though lovely) and chunky sweat shirts in a kind of, um, animal motif. Another blousy top featured cartoon graphics with sayings like “Join a weird trip.” On one level, a spoofy take on corporate dressing is welcomed. All those strange proportions and codes might work as an odd little mirror held up to reality. At one point fashion designer Ghesquiere sent out what looked like jumpsuits; the upper half was a conventional blazer, and the bottom might have been track pants in parachute silk prints, finished off with a belt so that your rear end was guaranteed to look enormous. In New York, we’ve all seen that mishmash of styles on the subway: the thick leather jacket, the ’80s trousers and two-tone elf boots, the touch of metallic animal prints. And the attitude is admirable because it really isn’t about Fashion. But on another level, you don’t need this point of view from Balenciaga. It’s a bit pedestrian. Although the collection had a number of strong pieces, like the skirts and many of the tops, there is just not enough merit to the idea to keep you interested. Fashion Designer Rick Owens opened his Paris collection with floor-scraping coats and pebbly wool dresses, the models’ heads covered in knitted caps that formed cages over their faces. Their lips were bright red. In his fashion, designer Owens was elegant. And he raised the bar with beautiful leather jackets, among his most beautiful, with dolman sleeves; cropped at the waist, they were worn with slim, draped wool skirts in a slightly contrasting tone. After his January Paris men’s show, with its Oscar Wilde allusions that landed like a heavy volume, designer Dries Van Noten use of 17th-century Asian silk prints in his women’s show on Wednesday felt comfortably at home in his world. Maybe Mr. Van Noten can’t be funny on a runway. Read more…

Paris Fashion Week: CELINE show impresses Anna Wintour

Paris Fashion Week for Fall 2012: Anna Wintour was overheard saying at the Celine presentation. “Can you please ensure all fashion shows are like this?”  “This” being a tiny gathering of 30 editors; Paris Haute Couture fashion designer, Phoebe Philo at the door personally greeting everyone and looking much more at ease than she has in the past, when she has been coralled in the middle of a crush of admirers backstage at Celine’s bigger shows. The designer is due to give birth to her third child next month – a boy – and perhaps it was an extra need for calm that prompted this new approach. Whatever, the white cube of a room, with its polished concrete floors suited Philo’s almost-cube shapes. It would be fascinating to see her drawings: do they resemble a child’s first blocky scribbles? The concept for this fashion week collection – rectangular tops and masculine trousers with low crotches – was certainly boxy. Add leather – the fabric of the season – to the equation and you have the components for a entire warehouse of cardboard packing cases. New York Fashion Week Fall 2012: Kate Spade

Katespadecollage
Designer Deborah Lloyd has really injected new energy and fun into the Kate Spade brand. For fall, she was inspired by French gamines hangin’ in the courtyard at the Palais Royale in Paris. That translated into a bright color story with lots of graphic touches, including the print on a full skirt spelling out “toutes les filles sont folles” (all the girls are mad), designed by blogger, fashion illustrator and photographer Garance Dore.

Dotnails One of the key looks in the collection was a pair of blazing orange pants cropped over polka dot heels, and worn with an aqua-colored cardigan. The colorful cropped pants-over-heels look is one that all the fashion girls are already wearing , and apparently, it’s going to have legs! There were lots of cute extras, too — jeweled Peter Pan collars, a puff of a marabou feather purse and sparkling fishnet tights. And the polka dot manicures were genius.

Jean Paul Gaultier’s tribute to Amy Winehouse hits wrong notes

Is it strictly appropriate for a French couturier to send out a catwalk homage to Amy Winehouse complete with models wearing exposed bra straps, Fred Perry collars, baseball jackets and shirts tucked into pencil skirts? Probably not. But yesterday in Paris Jean Paul Gaultier chose to do just that. A live barbershop quartet crooned an elliptical rendition of the late singer’s most famous recording, “Rehab”, and Gaultier went so far as to attach black veils to towering beehives for his … story ®Courtesy of inspirationsinmylife, wanna Read more!  NOTE: Paris fashion shows will begin very soon hosting Paris Fashion Week with the Fall fashion celebration of Haute Couture fashion. The 70s are back! Sister Sledge, Gloria Gaynor, Grace Jones and Chaka Khan performed during Etam’s Paris Fashion Week show tonight.

Anyone walking into the Beaux-Arts de Paris might have assumed they had stepped back in time tonight. Though fashion house Etam was hosting their Spring/Summer 2012 show, it was the 70s-era disco queens onstage who captured the evening’s spotlight tonight. Soul divas Sister Sledge, Gloria Gaynor, Grace Jones and Chaka Kahn all wore their glittery best to perform at the Paris Fashion Week show. Queen of Disco, ‘I Will Survive’ singer Gaynor, 63, still looked fabulous in a sparkling brown gown. Grace Jones looked every inch the Andy Warhol muse she was in a revealing black bodysuit, mid-calf length boots and a tuxedo jacket. Paris fashion week with Gloria Gaynor, Grace Jones, Chaka Khan, Sister Sledge and the Pointer Sisters. Heat be still! Haute couture at fashion house Etam was rawkin’ last night. Hopefully New York Fashion Week, London Fashion Week fashion designers will make some attempt to match this presentation with their fashion shows. The fashion industry with its street style, has arrived. 70s disco will live on. – - more on this Hot Show

Azzedine Alaïa’s Fashion System

PARIS, France — Quietly outside the fashion spotlight, Rue du Moussy is Alaïa’s home and workplace. The boutique, the atelier, the showroom, the studio for private clients, the designer’s residence — it’s all here, under one roof. For more than a decade, Alaïa has premiered his collections at his own rhythm, in discrete, private défilés here. He creates one collection per season. He doesn’t advertise; very few magazines are sent clothes to feature. He rarely gives interviews, and makes no public appearances. The relentless pace of the fashion industry has almost certainly contributed to the retirement, the downfall, and possibly even the death of some of the industry’s greatest creative talents. But is anyone asking questions that might lead to change? Today on the eve of his off-schedule show in Paris, BoF brings you an exclusive interview between our friends at 032c and the revered couturier Azzedine Alaïa, son of Tunisian farmers who has rejected a corporate fashion system he has called ‘inhumane’ and recently turned down the chance to replace John Galliano at Dior.

Ode to Madame Gres’ Draped Fashion

The creation “Femina dress, 1946″ by French fashion designer Madame Gres (1903-1993) is displayed during the exhibition “Madame Gres, Couture at Work” at the Bourdelle Museum in Paris July 7, 2011. For this celebrated couturier, who pleated and draped her waythrough a half century career in fashion, the art of meticulously folding fabric over the body to create dramatic sculpted forms elevated craft to art. Some 80 flowing creations from the artist who died in 1993 are on display this summer at Paris’ Musee Bourdelle, the first retrospective of this legendary Parisian with the signature Angora turban to whom contemporary fashion designers owe much. The exhibition will end on August 28.
