Top of the Line Show in Paris: LV

Paris Fashion Week Spring Summer 2012 report: Louis Vuitton
I have never (in all my years) heard a gasp as loud as the one that rippled through the audience when the curtain went up at the start of the Louis Vuitton show to reveal a full sized carousel, painted all in white, with 48 models in the new spring summer collection perched on top of the horses. I promise I am not exaggerating (well, maybe only the teeniest bit) when I say it was as close as any of us have got to a celestial vision. All that and Kate Moss too, who only walks for Marc these days and when she asked if she could close the show…….well how could he refuse.Music as delicate as a child’s music box accompanied the models as the merry go round started up and each one of them hopped off their ‘galloping’ horse to make an individual round of the circular stage. The rumors that an announcement about Marc Jacob’s move to Dior is imminent just won’t go away. It was widely discussed as we filed into the venue,  that the powers that be would most likely wait for the Vuitton reviews to come in before anything was said, lest an announcement steal the thunder from what is one of the most anticipated and most expensively produced shows on the Paris calendar. ‘Early next week,’ said one internet pundit with mock authority. ‘I hazard they’ll want to give the all important US newspapers time to get back behind their desks,’ said another. ‘They’, of course, is Bernard Arnault, mighty chairman of LVMH the most powerful luxury goods group in the world who is often referred to in the plural. It is he who owns both Louis Vuitton and Dior as well as myriad other brands. - – read more HERE

Designer ‘Gareth Pugh’ Paris Show

PARIS — If Yves Saint Laurent was widely hailed as a feminist for freeing women from pinching bustiers and nip-waisted dresses, what does that make Gareth Pugh? The British bad boy designer sent models out in convict stripes, leather cages and head-englobing plastic tears for his spring-summer 2012 collection at Paris fashion week. Pugh’s artistry is easy enough to appreciate: From a purely aesthetic point of view, his abbreviated sheath dresses made out of vertical strips of black or white leather were indisputably beautiful. – – more from Paris

Paris Show Designer Rick Owens Fall 2011

RICK OWENS

"California born Rick Owens delivers a superbly crafted and proportioned collection for autumn/winter 2011"
...Hillary Alexander.

The tunics and loose trousers tucked into boots at Rick Owens' autumn/winter 2011 collection shown at the Paris prêt-à-porter season today, suggested a slight Cossack air to me. The designer, however, was quick to clarify my interpretation; I was way off the radar, by a few millennium, at least. "Cossack? No! I was thinking more caveman; you know, the idea of 'just throw a blanket over her'. That was my basis."
If indeed 'troglodytes' were Owens' starting point, then he has crafted a best-dressed 'Neanderthal look' which would suggest Raquel Welch in 'One Million Years B.C.' was very poorly served indeed, by the wardrobe department.
This was in no way a question of 'just throwing a blanket' over anyone. The collection was a superbly crafted, proportioned and coloured blend of pieces, which started with a hood, or knitted 'snood', and progressed through a series of layers, through to wedge-soled knee-boots.

PARIS: Fall 2011--GARETH PUGH

Gareth Pugh’s fall 2011 collection was unmistakeably Pugh–having black dramatic shapes with a razor sharp edge, severe styling on the models and sci-fi undertones. Interestingly enough, there was also the shocking edition of electric blue and gold paneling for a more colorful adventure than seasons past.

MUGLER goes "Gaga"

Nicola Formichetti brought the Thierry Mugler women's collection roaring back to the runway Wednesday night, with Lady Gaga in long blond ponytails and giant platforms modeling for her stylist/collaborator, and the show streaming live on Facebook. Formachetti's designs -- tailored jackets and dresses with extreme "Metropolis" shoulders, latex pants and catsuits -- were not-too-distant cousins of Mugler's fierce-feminine looks from the '80s and '90s. But, gorgeous as the models were (including Coco Rocha and Jessica Stam in tribal makeup), they weren't the supermodels of yore. So when Formichetti sent them "vogue-ing" down the runway, '80s-style, not only did they occasionally look pained, a few of them actually stumbled.
