New York Fashion Week Fall 2012: Kate Spade

Katespadecollage
Designer Deborah Lloyd has really injected new energy and fun into the Kate Spade brand. For fall, she was inspired by French gamines hangin’ in the courtyard at the Palais Royale in Paris. That translated into a bright color story with lots of graphic touches, including the print on a full skirt spelling out “toutes les filles sont folles” (all the girls are mad), designed by blogger, fashion illustrator and photographer Garance Dore.

Dotnails One of the key looks in the collection was a pair of blazing orange pants cropped over polka dot heels, and worn with an aqua-colored cardigan. The colorful cropped pants-over-heels look is one that all the fashion girls are already wearing , and apparently, it’s going to have legs! There were lots of cute extras, too — jeweled Peter Pan collars, a puff of a marabou feather purse and sparkling fishnet tights. And the polka dot manicures were genius.

(Richard Drew / AP) One designer’s “merlot” is another’s “plum.” Add Peter Som to the list of labels showing this rich wine-y hue for next fall. Here, it stands out as stiff wool melton outerwear fashion. (French Style’s in New York City)
No doubt a great amount of time and skill went into making this fox patchwork coat. Which is why pieces like these should not be saved for special occasions. Why not wear it to the grocery store! • Som tends to introduce at least one new print to each collection. Last season, it was magnified rose blossoms in Technicolor. For this collection, it is the “mineral” print as it appears on a wool cropped jacket and day dress.
Fashion week styles though mixed in with many foreign influences, has a freshness that American fashion designers are known for. Marc Jacobs and other fashion designers like Peter Som, know how to capture those feelings that every fashion savvy woman is looking for. Jason Wu is another of Fashion weeks most cutting edge fashion designers who capture the essence of great Americana. Fashion Designer, Christian Dior – - Read more…

©ourtesy of heART to explain

Dramatic and eccentric, two adjectives that we hardly ever get to use when it comes to the already proven fashion designers at Madrid’s Fashion Week, but those are the words that describe the best Leandro Cano’s Haute Couture creations. Using natural materials such as wool and leather he constructed a collection that distorts the female body but somehow he managed to create an amazing theatrically feminine fashion show.  The textures Cano composed show his sense and ability of creating an astonishing couture pieces of clothes. Korean Design into New York FW

Concept Korea IV - Spring 2012
Photos: Concept Korea IV – Spring 2012
all photos by Kwai Chan
Korean fashion design has slowly made an inroad into New York, and it all started with the Concept Korea designer collectives that began four seasons ago.  Some designers from past seasons, such as Son Jung Wan and Parkchoonmoo, now have solo shows as part of the official Fall 2012 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week schedule.  Others are veterans of other Fashion Weeks around the world, such as the duo of Steve J. and Yoni P. who showed at the London Spring 2010 collections. For its fourth edition, Concept Korea featured the following designers in a presentation style: Son Jung Wan (who also held her second New York solo runway show later in the week), Lie Sang Bong, Steve J. and Yoni P., Doho, and Resurrection by Juyoung.  Although an understandably mixed bag in terms of aesthetics and styling with five very different design sensibilities, the collective represented South Korea’s continuing evolution in the world of fashion.  Lie Sang Bong used psychedelic shimmering neon space age cuts inspired by traditional Korean fashion, with killer matching fan clutches.  Doho chose a more ethereal route, with asymmetrical layered piles of tulle and other fabrics dominating.  Juyoung presented the only men’s collection of the five, combining color with semi-formal dress shirts.  Son Jung Wan chose to exhibit some additional looks that were not a part of her solo runway show; her commercially appealing womenswear is much better suited to this presentation format than on the catwalk.  Finally, Steve J. and Yoni P. channeled the ‘70s with their capsule collection, with flower power prints and tie-dyed dresses. – - © Story By Yuan-Kwan Chan

Film about Designer, Nary Manivong

By JEANNETTE CATSOULIS

In “Dressed ,” David Swajeski’s listless profile of the young clothing designer Nary Manivong, a passion for fashion elbows aside every other emotion. Yet even those viewers who share the film’s conviction that preparing a collection for New York Fashion Week is inherently fascinating may lose interest long before the final frock is fitted. That’s not entirely Mr. Swajeski’s fault, though his filmmaking skills are rudimentary at best. He has chosen a subject who is clearly uncomfortable discussing his heart-tugging life story, preferring to rhapsodize about his stylistic vision. Shy and self-effacing, Mr. Manivong can barely look at the camera when recounting his troubled childhood in Columbus, Ohio. Abandoned at 14 by his Laotian parents in 2000, he lived on the streets, often sleeping in an all-night doughnut shop. The years between then and 2007, when the film picks up, remain stubbornly vague (though Mr. Manivong’s former high school principal becomes a critical source of 11th-hour financing). Instead, we follow this designer in the run-up to his 2008 show at Bryant Park, complete with borrowed accessories and fully owned financial woes. As he chooses models and suffers a last-minute loss of his showroom (homelessness is a recurring theme), fashion industry notables pop up to pontificate and advise.
“Work like a dog,” says the designer Nanette Lepore. On the evidence of this film, I think Mr. Manivong has that part down.
